Caution - I love my MobileNavigator

While cruising down the highway and out of my comfort zone, my ancient Magellan GPS up and died, causing abject panic on my part. Having a GPS is comforting to me, especially when I’m driving a rental car in unknown territory. I’m wimpy that way.

Caution.

Fortunately hubby was behind the wheel, so as I was quietly panicking because I was soon to be on my own, I started researching GPS’s, in the car, on the iPad. How cool is that?

Caution.

I don’t have to tell you there are tons out there. As I was researching, a couple of questions came to mind:

  1. Did I want to stay with what I knew.
  2. Did I want to get a stand-alone device again.
  3. Cost and purchase, after all we were on the road.
  4. I wanted verbal directions.
  5. Easy re-routes and choices of routes.
  6. Easy to read on my phone.

Researching over the internet and chatting with my practical husband, we decided that since I had an iPhone and always carried it with me, why not put that to use and have only ONE device to keep track of. Works for me.

After reading ALL the reviews on the top ten GPS’s listed for the iPhone, I liked what I read and saw about MobileNavigator-Navigon. We tried downloading it on the road to “kick the tires” so to speak. (Go ahead and laugh). We are the “we want it NOW type” so imagine our shock when we had to wait. IT is a HUGE download and takes awhile, so settling into a WiFi hotspot is a must.

After downloading, and since we were in hubby’s “home” territory, we gave it a test drive. Since I have a “learning curve” with electronics, I entered addresses, looked for points of interest and chose the route. It is extremely user friendly walking you through the screens and giving you a choice of at least 2-3 routes. We chose our route and commenced to driving. Since hubby knew his way around, he’d divert from the route, see how fast it caught up, verify the re-route was totally viable and pronounced it SOLID.

  • Directions are given well in advance and repeated until you make the move.
  • IF you miss the move/turn - Re-routes are done moving forward if at all possible, keeping u-turns to aminimum.
  • Signs and routes are displayed and can be easily seen and read on the phone screen.
  • You may need to increase your data plan.
  • It does drain the battery so I keep my phone plugged in.

Caution.

Another feature, which took us a moment to figure out was CAUTION. That’s the device warning you that you are speeding. The screen also has a speed limit sign in the upper right corner so it does keep you on the straight and narrow if you choose. If not, it nags.

Caution.

Have iPhone, will Travel.

I like your style Lynn. The old GPS does have a tendency to put you in your comfort zone. It amuses me at times when I can get mine totally lost for a while.
